UK Used vs Brand New Phones: What to Check Before You Buy

UK used or brand new? What the condition labels mean, when each makes sense, and a 7-step checklist to run on any used phone before you pay in Nigeria.

Buying a phone in Nigeria usually comes down to one question: brand new or UK used? A UK used flagship can cost much less than the same model sealed in the box, but only if it's in the condition you expect. This guide explains the difference and gives you a checklist to run through before you pay, whoever you buy from.

What the condition labels mean

  • New — sealed in the original box, never activated. It comes with the manufacturer's warranty.
  • UK used — a pre-owned phone imported from the UK. Usually well kept, but it has been used, so battery health and small marks vary from phone to phone.
  • Foreign used — the same idea, imported from another country (for example the US or Canada).
  • Fairly used — pre-owned locally, in Nigeria.

At our store every listing carries one of these labels, and the product page describes any visible wear. Brand-new items come with the manufacturer's warranty; used items come with a 7-day functional warranty from delivery unless the product page says otherwise. Our Refund & Returns Policy has the full details.

When brand new makes sense

  • You plan to keep the phone for three years or more and want a fresh battery.
  • You want the full manufacturer's warranty.
  • The price gap between new and UK used for that model is small (common with older or mid-range models).

When UK used makes sense

  • You want a flagship camera and screen for less money.
  • You're happy to check the phone carefully (or have the seller show you) before paying.
  • You upgrade every year or two anyway.

Checklist: before you pay for any used phone

Do these checks in person, or ask for a video showing each one.

1. Account and lock status

  • iPhone: Settings → [your name] must be signed out, and Find My must be off. A phone still linked to someone else's Apple ID can be locked remotely.
  • Android: the phone should not ask for a previous owner's Google or Samsung account after a reset.

2. Battery

  • iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Note the maximum capacity. Above 85% is good for a used phone; below 80% iOS may recommend a service.
  • Samsung: use the Samsung Members app → Diagnostics → Battery status.
  • Ask whether the battery has been replaced and whether a genuine part was used. On recent iPhones, Settings → General → About shows a "Parts and Service History" section.

3. Screen

  • Look for scratches, dead pixels, burn-in (faint images that stay on screen) and yellow or pink tint. Open a plain white page at full brightness.
  • Check that touch works everywhere: drag an app icon slowly across the whole screen.
  • On iPhone, a replaced screen may show "Unknown part" in Parts and Service History.

4. Cameras, Face ID and fingerprint

  • Take photos and a video with every rear camera and the front camera. Check that focus works and there are no spots.
  • Set up Face ID or the fingerprint sensor. If it fails to enrol, walk away.

5. Calls, network and sound

  • Insert your SIM, make a call, and check both the earpiece and the speaker.
  • Record a voice note to test the microphone.
  • Confirm the phone isn't network-locked to a foreign carrier.

6. Charging and buttons

  • Plug it in and confirm it charges. Press every button and test the silent switch or Action button.

7. Match the details

  • The IMEI in Settings (or by dialling *#06#) should match the box, if there is one.
  • Storage size and model should match what you're paying for.

Price: compare like with like

FAQ

Is UK used the same as refurbished?

Not necessarily. "Refurbished" usually means the phone has been repaired or had parts replaced and was then tested. A UK used phone may be in its original condition. Ask the seller what, if anything, has been replaced.

What battery health is acceptable?

For a used phone, 85% or more is a good sign. Between 80% and 85% is usable but expect shorter battery life. Factor in the cost of a new battery if it's lower.

What if a used phone develops a fault after I buy it?

Used gadgets from us come with a 7-day functional warranty from delivery unless the product page states otherwise. Report a fault with photos or a short video and we'll repair, replace or refund it, as set out in our returns policy.
